What is Neurotoxin?

It is a purified neurotoxin complex that blocks the action of Acetylcholine. Acetylcholine is a important neurotransmitter that stimulates muscle contraction. Neurotoxin REVERSIBLY blocks the release of Acetylcholine and therefore inhibits muscle contraction.

How does it work?

Wrinkles in the skin are caused by traction on the skin from the underlying muscle contraction. Over time, factors such as aging and repeated facial expressions can make the wrinkles more noticeable. Treatment of the muscle with neurotoxin can decrease this traction, softening the wrinkles over muscles of facial expression.

The procedure involves injection of neurotoxin into the subcutaneous layer of skin which allows diffusion over an area, affecting the underlying muscle. In some cases, injections are administered directly into the muscle, such as in treatment for masseter hypertrophy.

Static vs Dynamic Lines

It is important to recognise the difference between static lines and dynamic lines.

Static lines are present in the facial skin at rest. These are unable to be modified by neurotoxin.

Dynamic lines are present when facial muscles are activated and are not prominent at rest. These may be able to be treated with Neurotoxin injections

Which muscle groups are treated?

The muscles of facial expression are usually treated in groups:

- Forehead

- Glabella or frown lines

- Lateral Smile Lines or crow’s feet

- Lateral Nasal Lines or bunny lines

- Smile Contouring e.g. for gummy smile

- Facial Slimming

Before your appointment

If you have any questions, Eileen will have time to answer them during your consultation. It may help you to keep a list of any questions you may have and to bring this to your appointment.

Please remove make-up before your appointment so that we can best assess your skin tone and facial expressions accurately.

Please ensure that you are hydrated and that you have eaten a small meal prior to your appointment.

Your appointment

We are focused on working with you to achieve realistic, natural results. Your skin should look relaxed and hydrated. Being able to make meaningful facial expressions should be the outcome of your treatment. It is important to assess your goals and expectations of treatment during your Initial Consultation.

Clinical photos will be taken prior to your treatment. We do not routinely take post-treatment photos. We feel that photos can be affected by angles, lighting and can be manipulated in post-production. This means that photos can be an inaccurate representation of the overall results. We recommend that you try not to focus on a particular facial feature. Instead, we recommend that you focus on the overall balance of your facial appearance after treatment.

We will complete an Informed Consent Form together, which will take you through the risks of the procedure.

Treatment

Treatment areas will be injected using small-gauge needles. The treatment ranges in sensation from mild to moderate discomfort depending upon the area being treated. There may be a small amount of bleeding at the infection site but this usually resolves by the time you leave your appointment.
